Remodel

Historic Bungalow Remodel

A sensitive whole-house remodel of a 1920s Craftsman bungalow in Milwaukee. Updated kitchen, opened floor plan, and added a primary bath while preserving original character details.

Location: Milwaukee, WI
Size: 1,650 sq ft
Year: 2023

Project Overview

The owners of this 1920s Craftsman bungalow loved their neighborhood and their home’s character but needed a modern kitchen, an updated bathroom, and a more open living layout. The challenge was making meaningful improvements without losing the details that give the home its soul.

Design Highlights

  • Kitchen expansion into an underused pantry area, nearly doubling the work space
  • Opened sight lines between kitchen, dining, and living areas while retaining Craftsman trim details
  • New primary bathroom carved from an adjacent closet, featuring period-appropriate tile work
  • Restored original woodwork — built-in bookcases, crown molding, and hardwood floors refinished throughout
  • Updated mechanical systems concealed within existing walls and chases

Preservation Approach

Every design decision was filtered through one question: does this honor the home’s original character? We matched new trim profiles to the originals, sourced period-style hardware, and used materials consistent with 1920s Craftsman aesthetics. The result feels like the home was always this way.
