Addition

Family Room Addition

A 400 sq ft family room addition to a mid-century ranch home in Waukesha. Designed with large windows, vaulted ceiling, and seamless connection to the existing home.

Location: Waukesha, WI
Size: 400 sq ft
Year: 2024

Project Overview

This growing family had outgrown their ranch home’s compact living room. Rather than move, they chose to add a generous family room that connects to their existing kitchen and opens to the backyard.

Design Highlights

  • Vaulted ceiling to create an airy, spacious feel in the new room
  • Large sliding doors opening to a new patio for indoor-outdoor living
  • Matching roofline and siding so the addition looks original to the home
  • Built-in media wall with flanking storage cabinets
  • Wide opening to kitchen creating a natural flow between cooking and gathering spaces

Structural Integration

Connecting a new addition to a 1960s ranch requires careful attention to foundations, roof transitions, and structural loads. The design uses a continuous ridge detail that ties the new roof seamlessly into the existing structure, and the foundation was engineered to match the original’s frost depth and bearing capacity.
